Police hunt for rapist, killer

A SERIAL killer is allegedly on the loose in the Mtunzini area near Empangeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Police yesterday issued a strong warning to people in the area to be on the alert after the discovery of the bodies of two women in the area.

The women were found raped and strangled a few days after they went missing.

The police have also appealed to families whose relatives are missing to contact the police immediately.

The discovery of the women's bodies, both in their 20s, have sparkedconcerns that the killings are the work of the same person.

The body of Nomthandazo Ncube, 26, was found on Saturday morning dumped near her home in Nhlangenyuke, Mtunzini. She went missing on August 5.

The body of Nonhlanhla Mbonambi, 23, was found on Friday in Qwayinduku, near her homestead.

According to Mbonambi's brother she had left home to go to a party at another family homestead nearby.

Nhlangenyuke and Qwayinduku are not far from each other and police say the modus operandi used in both killings are similar.

Police spokesperson Mbongeni Mdlalose said the Mtunzini police had put together a special team to investigate the two cases.

Mdlalose said warnings are being issued to community members to be on their guard to prevent any further killings in the area.

"A task team has been established to investigate the killings," Mdlalose said.

"In the meantime we urge people to be extra vigilant.

"We believe the killer is dangerous and I urge especially women not to walk around alone at night."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Captain Coenie Herbst or Inspector Oliver Mthethwa on 035-340-1633, or to call the police crime stop number 08600-10111.
