A TRAIN passenger was killed and two others were seriously injured when a drunk passenger went on a shooting spree.

A TRAIN passenger was killed and two others were seriously injured when a drunk passenger went on a shooting spree.

Passengers were travelling on the Shosholoza Meyl from Gauteng to Durban when the gunman struck in the early hours on Monday.

It is believed that the man went on a rampage inside the train between Volksrust and Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Police reported that the alleged killer boarded the train in Standerton and he was busy drinking with his friends.

He suddenly pulled out his firearm and started shooting at fellow passengers without provocation.

He was disarmed by other passengers who alerted police.

The assailant, believed to be 32 years old, was arrested by Newcastle police at the train station.

Police spokesperson Shooz Magudulala said: "Three people were shot and one of them died."
