Society must make sure that all women in South Africa are liberated.
Women are violated almost everyday. Girl children are constantly abused and their innocence destroyed by those they trust and count on.
Minister of Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya themed this Women's Month "Together Empowering Women for Development and Gender Equality". Women's Day reaffirms the power of women to work together to bring about fundamental change in society.
Pass laws no longer exist but the 1956 women's petition included a vision broader than the abolition of pass laws.
Can women rest now? Have their rights and those of their girl children been secured? If the answer is no, we need to roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty. We need to fight vigorously to make sure that women's emancipation is achieved.
One of the aims of Women's Month is to explore and debate how best we can achieve this objective. When food production is increased, we must ensure that women are gaining in that chain.
We need to mobilise women in agriculture. We need to ensure that they become entrepreneurs.
Funding remains one of the biggest challenges for women in agriculture and all partners and sisters locally and internationally must support an emergency fund for this sector. There is much work to be done by society before women farmers are taken seriously.
