9th SHOPPING CENTRe ROBBERY IN ONE WEEK

TWO SBV cash-in-transit security guards have been shot in the head at the Trade Route Mall in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

TWO SBV cash-in-transit security guards have been shot in the head at the Trade Route Mall in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

The guards were filling an FNB ATM with cash yesterday morning when gunmen pounced on them.

They shot three times at the guards, injuring both of them.

The thugs made off with one bag of cash and a pistol.

One guard was seriously wounded in the head and had to be airlifted to Milpark Hospital. The second guard was taken to hospital by ambulance.

A R250000 reward has been offered by SBV Security Services for information leading to the arrest of the gunmen.

The thugs fled the scene in a white Nissan bakkie in the direction of a nearby informal settlement.

"I saw eight men run toward a white bakkie, they had big guns. Inside the vehicle was one passenger and the driver," said Yaseen Gift, a sales assistant at the mall.

Captain Mbulaheni Netshivhodza said: "The suspects managed to get away with one bag of money and a pistol belonging to a guard."

On Sunday, the ministry of police said criminals cannot "operate willy-nilly and endanger the security of the public."

Spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said eight attacks in the past week had angered the minister.

The Trade Route Mall attack was the ninth.

The brazen shopping centre attacks started last week at the Killarney Mall in Johannesburg, where a Coin Security guard was robbed of cash boxes.

Lenasia police appealed to members of the public to call the police with any information on 011-213-6000.

Kobus Swart from SBV can be contacted on 083-408-7036.
