santana will lead bafana

BAFANA Bafana coach Joel Santana will be on the bench when the South Africa take on Serbia in an international friendly at Super Stadium tomorrow.

BAFANA Bafana coach Joel Santana will be on the bench when the South Africa take on Serbia in an international friendly at Super Stadium tomorrow.

Santana, whose trip back to South Africa was delayed because of pneumonia, is expected back this morning.

He will take his charges through their paces at Super Stadium, in Atteridgeville, in the afternoon.

Santana was not present at the announcement of the squad last Thursday and there were fears that he might miss the match.

But the South African Football Association confirmed yesterday that doctors in Brazil had cleared Santana to travel back to South Africa after the burly mentor underwent a medical check-up in Rio de Janeiro yesterday.

Bafana assembled on Saturday and they had a training session at Pilditch Stadium yesterday.

All the players turned out for the camp, bar German-based goalkeeper Rowen "Spider" Fernandez, who delayed his arrival because his club Arminia Bielefeld played last night.

The former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper is expected tomorrow morning.

Serbia arrive this morning and coach Radomir Antic will need nothing but a win to inspire his charges for a crucial Fifa 2010 World Cup qualifier against France in September 9.

A win will confirm the enterprising Serbian side's qualification for the quadrennial soccer fiesta.

They are leading the six-team Group 7 with 18 points from seven matches.

France are second with 10 points from five matches.

Players such as Milan Jovanovic and Neven Subotic are likely to be a menace to Bafana.

Richard "Kimberley Express" Henyekane, Katlego Mphela, Steven Pienaar and Teko Modise could be key to beating Serbia.

Kickoff is at 7pm.
