OFFICIALS from the auditor-general's office have set up shop at the SABC headquarters in Auckland Park to investigate allegations of mismanagement and corruption.

A team of investigators have occupied fourth floor offices since last Monday after being ordered by Parliament's portfolio committee to probe the litany of allegations.

The financial and managerial crisis at the organisation eventually saw the previous board being dissolved by Parliament in June.

The auditor-general's office will be investigating the claims made by:

l The former board and its chairperson, Khanyi Mkonza, against management;

l The various unions representing staff at the SABC, who compiled a dossier alleging a litany of improprieties, corruption and the flouting of fiduciary duties by both the board and management;

l Senior members of management as well as former chief executive Dali Mpofu against the board; and

l The interim board and Parliament's portfolio committee.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the investigators were receiving "full cooperation" from management and staff have been encouraged to participate in the probe.

"Staff and anyone with information are encouraged to interact with them via a special e-mail account, while boxes have been allocated for those who wish to provide information anonymously."

He said it was anticipated that the probe would last until the end of the month, after which a report would be tabled before the communications committee in Parliament.

"They requested a lot of documents with the required information pertinent to all allegations put before them," Kganyago said.

"We will give them our full cooperation as management and the [interim] board, and have also appealed to staff and the unions to make themselves available."

Africa Boso, spokesperson for the auditor-general, said he was unable to comment on ongoing investigations.

"The auditor-general has publicly committed to table [to Parliament] a report on the SABC on September 21. In order to meet this commitment and comply with standard guidelines, our team has been fully capacitated," Boso said.

In March the SABC announced pre-tax losses of R800million - now believed to have escalated to more than R1billion - and it has since gone cap in hand to the government for a R2,4billion bailout.

Soon after the dissolution of the board, Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda also announced plans to create a new funding model for the broadcaster.
