Deputy Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba announced yesterday that a process was under way to extend the status of political refugees to five years.

This is aimed at affording asylum seekers legal status in the country "for as long as they do not feel safe in their countries of birth".

Gigaba was visiting Musina where he met with bodies dealing with Zimbabwean immigrants. - Sowetan
