FOCUS IS ON THE RURAL AREAS

MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza presented an upbeat and ambitious agriculture and rural development budget yesterday.

Her main focus was on rural areas of Gauteng, which are beset by climate change, scarce skills and the migration of workers to the urban areas.

She said this year's budget totalled R436,843m, including R49,943m in the form of conditional grants from the national department.

Breakdown of figures:

l Agriculture has been allocated R165,634m,

l Conservation R47m,

l Environment R81,194m, and

l administration R143,015m.

The conditional grants allocation of R49,943 will be used to support specific projects vetted by the national department.

l The Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP) for food security and infrastructure development.

l Letsema-Ilima project to increase food production.

l Disaster Management for relief due to natural disasters.

l Road Infrastructure preservation.

l Job creation that will be used through the Extended Public Works Programme, especially in labour intensive projects.
