A call for the arrest of South African-born Israeli soldier David Benjamin was slammed by the SA Jewish Board of Deputies and the SA Zionist Forum yesterday.
"This is an attempt at manipulating the judiciary for partisan political purposes," the organisations said.
"Politically motivated attempts to undermine judicial independence as well as freedom of expression in South Africa should be condemned, as should any moves to import a foreign conflict to South Africa," the statement read.
They were responding to a request by the Media Review Network and the Palestinian Solidarity Alliance to the authorities to arrest Benjamin for alleged war crimes during the 2008-09 Gaza war.
The organisations were angered by an invitation to Benjamin to address a conference hosted by Limmud-SA.
The PSA and MRN yesterday said they had approached the SA authorities to investigate alleged war crimes by Israel and some South African citizens during the war.
