IT IS hypocritical of Tokyo Sexwale to say that the service delivery protests are directed at the previous governments.
As a former premier, Sexwale contributed to the inequities of the post-apartheid era. He is an elite and one of those privileged blacks who amassed billions of rands, thanks to the BEE policies.
The current leadership is right to undo the trend of a few becoming stinking rich while the majority starve. The root cause of the protests is the ever-widening chasm between rich and poor. Poor people view politicians who buy expensive, fancy cars as corrupt, selfish and insensitive to their plight.
Those who claim to have the interests of the poor at heart should not contradict that with their extravagant lifestyles. Politicians should tread carefully. The public is watching their every move.
