The young Buccaneers beat Chang Chun Yatai from China 2-0 in their opener and conceded a soft goal late in their second game to give Belgium's KRC Genk a 1-0 victory against the run of play.
Pirates have their work cut out today as they face Westbrom Albion of England and Boin Middle School from South Korea.
As things stand Pirates are second on the log with three points. Genk are on six points after they beat Albion 2-1 in their earlier game to top Group A.
Sakhile Ngubo scored Pirates' first goal 20 minutes into the game as the Soweto youngsters gave the Chinese the runaround and Sanele Mabaso increased the lead in the second half with a scorcher following a neat pass from strike partner Ngubo.
Although beaten, the Chinese showed flashes of brilliance with players such as Peng Peng, Wei Wang and Ailong Yang proving to be useful on the ball.
In the second game Pirates took the field on the offensive and it looked like they were going to bury the opposition, but they were let down by their overindulgence and trying to walk the ball into the net instead of taking shots. In players like Mabaso, Ngubo, Lloyd "China" Zondi and captain Tshepo Diphoko, they had the necessary ammunition but then somehow failed to ignite the fuse.
Genk on the other hand were content to sit back and absorb the pressure, looking to play on the counter-attack.
"The move paid off in the second half when they got a free kick following a foul against Leopold Njengo.
Anthony Limbombe jumped higher than the rest to flick the ball over Marumo Mashimane in Pirates' goal to give an undeserved 1-0 victory that propelled them to the top of Group A.
