Western Cape ANC divided over task team

THE ANC in Western Cape is divided over the new provincial task team announced by the party's national working committee yesterday.

The NWC yesterday placed the province under the control of a team of 23 headed by Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana.

A few weeks ago the ANC dissolved the Western Cape provincial executive committee, headed by Mcebisi Skwatsha, following cries from the alliance partners about infighting and factionalism, which they said had contributed to the party's dismal performance in the April elections.

But, insiders told Sowetan yesterday that the provincial task team could compound the divisions. A senior politician accused the NWC of appointing "an entirely pro-Skwatsha group" to the provincial task team.

The source said ANC structures in Western Cape were divided into "pro-Skwatsha" supporters and those who supported former premier Ebrahim Rasool, now reportedly being led by former housing MEC Richard Dyantyi .

"The group under Dyantyi submitted their own list to the NWC but they have ignored it and so the fight will go on."
