We can defeat H1N1, says KZN

THE KwaZulu-Natal department of health yesterday announced measures to deal with the "swine flu" pandemic.

THE KwaZulu-Natal department of health yesterday announced measures to deal with the "swine flu" pandemic.

This at a time when South Africa announced its first H1N1 death and the number of reported cases in the province rose to 29.

Departmental spokesperson Chris Maxon said the province had nothing to fear since only 12 of the 29 cases were confirmed so far.

"We received reports of 29 laboratory confirmed cases in the region - Durban 10, Pietermaritzburg 12, Ballito 1, Pennington 1 and Empangeni-Richards Bay 5.

In most cases the treatment administered is a precautionary measure. We ask doctors who see individuals suffering from flu-like symptoms to consider H1N1 as part of the differential diagnosis, even where there is no travel history," he said.

Maxon said the department has launched a massive public education campaign through radio and the print media. The message was that "Together we can beat the flu!"
