Telkom and union in talks while workers march

FIXED-LINE users will have it tough in the coming weeks if the current wage dispute between the Communication Workers Union and Telkom is not resolved.

Yesterday about 6 000 members of the CWU took to the streets in Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal demanding better wages.

CWU general secretary Gallant Roberts said the union will today march to Telkom's headquarters in Pretoria to hand over a memorandum of demands.

The union wants Telkom to review the current pay scales before implementing a tabled 7,5percent wage increase.

This includes backdating the salary increment and the wage adjustment to April 1.

The union is also demanding "the equitable distribution of Telkom profits to its employees".

The union said if agreement is not reached within the next seven days, there will be a national strike next Tuesday.

Cosatu has thrown its weight behind the CWU and urged all union members to "support all these activities by their comrades in the CWU".

Telkom's Meshack Dlamini said: "The parties are still involved in discussions and these talks [continued yesterday] as well. The company has contingency measures in place to minimise the potential effect of industrial action."
