Buses back on the road

DURBAN'S scaled down bus service got under way yesterday as promised by the new operator Transnat Africa.

DURBAN'S scaled down bus service got under way yesterday as promised by the new operator Transnat Africa.

About 43 of the 450 buses resumed operations in major Durban townships such as Umlazi, KwaMashu and Ntuzuma. Transnat said the full rollout of buses would increase over the next few weeks.

Transnat chief executive Mike Jesserman said they planned to have about 100 buses on the road by the end of this week.

He said since last Friday more than 80 drivers came to Transnat individually to apply for their jobs despite no agreement having been reached with unions.

The city and Transnat had planned that the bus service would be back by June 20, but hit a snag as the Transport and Allied Workers Union demanded that all fired drivers be employed.
