Rural children are not going to be left out

EARLY childhood development centres, crèches or kindergartens in rural areas will also be catered for when the Absa and Sowetan ECD Awards nominations process starts soon.

These awards are staged in partnership with SABC Education, the national Education Department, South African Congress for Early Childhood Development and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.

They represent South Africa's attempt to lead the professional enhancement and infrastructure and academic development and support of unsung heroes and heroines who mould our children into independent, assertive and dependable individuals.

They include caregivers, teachers and managers of ECD centres, crèches and kindergartens.

These special people are given awards for best resource and training organisations, home-based centre or playgroups, practitioners and community-based centres.

And, among others an award recognising and acknowledging innovative ECD programmes is due to be added.

This fine nation-building partnership is aligned to the collective education, training and development campaign of the Education, Health and Social Development departments. The departments seek or encourage the proper registration and accreditation of ECD centres, the academic development and accreditation of ECD practitioners and the children's social, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and moral growth and development.

Informal centres or crèches that are not registered or linked in any way to the education, social development and health departments are usually run by untrained, inadequately-trained or unqualified managers, caregivers and teachers.

At such establishments, children are basically kept from harm and mischief while their parents are at work, but they get no tangible or meaningful stimulation and development.

The centres and practitioners that are touched by the ECD award nominations and award processes are encouraged to become part of the best ECD networks, which are facilitated by the South African Congress for ECD.
