Div the hero

Springbok coach Peter deVilliers' exploits are a study in how to confound critics.

Springbok coach Peter deVilliers' exploits are a study in how to confound critics.

Ever since his appointment as the first black coach of the national rugby team, De Villiers has had to deal with all sorts of problems none of his predecessors were bothered by.

Some deliberately mistook SA Rugby Union boss Oregan Haskins' assertion that affirmative action had been a factor in De Villiers' hiring to mean that he was a token appointment.

Under his guidance the Boks scored a historic series victory against the British and Irish Lions. This past weekend the Boks completed the first home back-to-back victories against the All Blacks since 1976.

To most of us De Villiers is a hero, a credit to rugby and a major figure in the transformation debate that dogs it.
