Jazzman takes on hardy vet

IS JASPER "Jazzman" Seroka dancing into a trap?

IS JASPER "Jazzman" Seroka dancing into a trap?

It won't be easy for him to beat Mzonke "Rose of Khayelitsha" Fana tonight. But it might be even harder for Seroka to look good.

This is an intriguing match between a young, fearless and hungry fighter and a battle-tested veteran.

It is usually a good formula, especially when the veteran is headed for a career-defining fight.

The winner tonight not only earns the number-one spot in the IBF's lightweight ratings but also the right to challenge the winner of the clash between Malcolm Klassen and Robert Guerrero.

The "Stone" Klassen, the IBF champion, will defend against "The Ghost" Guerrero from Mexico on August 22 at Toyota Centre in Houston, Texas.

Tonight's fight will be presented by Branco Sports Productions at Nasrec Arena near Soweto. It will be televised live on Blow by Blow at 10pm.

Fana, 35, a former SA and WBC champ, once held the IBF diadem. He won it from Klassen in April 2007 but lost it to Cassius Baloyi in April last year. Four months later, Fana blew away Victor Manon in three rounds, making it easy for his promoter Branco Milenkovic to convince the IBF's sanctioning committee that Fana deserved another shot.

On the other hand, Seroka, 26 - from Namakgale, Phalaborwa in Limpopo - might have bitten off more than he can chew by accepting this fight. It is unclear how this SA and ABU champion was approved for such a fight. But Seroka has the brains and skills to cause an upset. Fana has 28 wins (11 KOs) and four losses while Seroka has 18 wins (8 KOs) and one defeat.
