The Missionary Care Society Centre at Orange Farm in the Vaal, Gauteng, cares for the elderly. It has a frail care centre. The centre, which was founded in 1998, also takes in orphans and the destitute. It cares for the sick in the Orange Farm community of 350000 souls people.
People receive counselling and food parcels. They are taught coffin-making, welding, carpentry and dressmaking.
The centre was the recipient of the Oriental Plaza's Night of a Thousand Blankets drive, which is run by trustees Kay Mottiar and Fatima Noor Mohamed.
"Our hearts go out to the needy and orphaned at this time of the year when the winter cold bites so cruelly," Mottiar and Mohamed said.
"We work hard to ensure that the drive is successful. We try our best to match the donations to the needs of the people.
"We pray that we never forget the foundation laid for us by the founders of the Plaza. It is an honour to do this for the poor. We get a thrill for doing something for the people and to help the shopkeepers to donate and get blessings from God," the organisers said.
They thanked Mama Angel and Sowetan for working with their community outreach programme.
Mnisi-Msibi was overjoyed at the donation and said the centre had faced a tough winter. She hugged everyone while trying to thank them.
