ANC alliance partners Cosatu and the SACP have lambasted the announcement by the South African Local Government Association that it might cut off free water and electricity to meet the wage demands made by striking municipal workers.
Salga said it would have to cut these free basic services if it was to meet the 15percent wage increase demanded by the South African Municipality Workers' Union.
The statement was made on Tuesday by Salga executive director Mzwanele Yawa.
Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi told Salga to "open its books to the unions for inspection, to demonstrate to all that it has been impacted negatively by the financial crisis".
SACP spokesperson Malesela Maleka said: " Salga should find a better way of negotiating than pitting employees against the community."
