The grant was rejected by the previous administration but Jacob Zuma's allies, specifically Blade Nzimande and Zwelinzima Vavi, built the support for Zuma's victory on a promise that Zuma would introduce the grant.
Within 100 days in power Zuma's regime has rejected the grant. When the ANC government under Thabo Mbeki rejected it on the same grounds - that it would bankrupt the government- the Mbeki regime was called names by left-wing forces.
Marches for the grant were encouraged by ANC leaders such as Zweli Mkhize, Willies Mchunu and Zola Skweyiya.
In the African Communist and Umsebenzi journals of the SACP and Cosatu, pro-grant positions were advocated to demonstrate that Mbeki was pro-business and anti-poor.
The protesters demanding the grant must are acting in the same way Zuma's supporters did during his trials and at the Polokwane conference.
Such a painful truth must be brought home to the ANC and the left since such behaviour is what led to the formation of Cope.
The chickens are coming home to roost for leaders who glorified the singing of umshini wami and the public jeering of Mbeki and Terror Lekota, who was chairperson of the ANC at the time.
The 500000 jobs ANC leaders are referring to cannot replace decent jobs lost in the retail, motor, construction and mining industries.
