"A vehicle believed to have attempted to make a U-turn on the M41 was hit on the side by a taxi.
"The elderly couple in the car was trapped in the wreckage," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.
Jaws of Life had to be used to free the couple.
They were both severely injured and taken to Umhlanga Hospital. Six people in the taxi were also hurt .
They were taken to provincial hospitals . - Sapa
