Cops nab alleged criminal kingpin

POLICE in Modimolle, Limpopo, have arrested a 34-year-old man who was wanted for various cases ranging from armed robbery to vehicle hijacking and possession of suspected stolen goods.

POLICE in Modimolle, Limpopo, have arrested a 34-year-old man who was wanted for various cases ranging from armed robbery to vehicle hijacking and possession of suspected stolen goods.

Matome Makwela was arrested at his Phagameng home after police discovered a large amount of suspected stolen goods there when they went to question him about a case of pointing a firearm.

Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba said the police recovered a lot of valuable items from the suspect's house during the arrest.

He said a Toyota Tazz found in the suspect's house was reported hijacked in Vaalbank in Mpumalanga last week.

"We are quite confident that we have arrested the main man who has been tormenting local businesses and households for many years," he said.

Makwela identified as appeared briefly in court on Tuesday on where he faced charges of assault, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of suspected stolen goodsproperties, housebreaking and thef t in business premises.

He will appear in court again next Monday for a bail hearing.

Ledwaba said Makwela might be linked to other cases in the area. He said that the police were searching for four other suspects who are believed to be Makwela's accomplices in the crime spree in the area.
