THERE are an estimated 49,32million people in South Africa, Statistics SA said yesterday.

Blacks were in the majority (39,14million) and constituted just more than 79percent of the total population, the Pretoria-based agency said.

The white population was estimated at 4,47million, the coloured population at 4,43million and the Indian-Asian population at 1,28million.

Fifty-twopercent (25,45million) of the population was female. Gauteng comprised the largest share of the population with about 10,53million people (21,4percent) living in the province.

KwaZulu-Natal had the second-largest population, with 10,45million people (21,2percent) living there.

With a population of about 1,15million people (2,3percent), the Northern Cape had the smallest share of South Africa's population.

The rate of growth for the country's population declined between 2001 and 2009.

The total number of people living with HIV was estimated at 5,21million.

For 2009, Statistics SA estimated that about 1,5million people aged 15 and older, and about 106000 children would need antiretroviral treatment. - Sapa
