DAR ES SALAAM - A bus crashed into a truck in northeastern Tanzania after bursting a tyre, killing 33 people, police said yesterday.

Simon Sirro, regional police commander for Tanga, said the accident occurred on Sunday in Korogwe, about 200km northwest of the commercial capital Dar es Salaam. The bus allegedly burst a tyre.

Among those killed were an American woman and a Kenyan man, Sirro said.

Fatal road accidents are rife in East Africa, where roads and vehicles are poorly maintained and speeding is common.

Last week, 22 people died in Kenya when two buses collided. - Reuters
