ABUJA - Islamist militants attacked a police station in northern Nigeria yesterday, and police killed 39 militants and arrested more than 150 others.

No policemen were killed in the attack in the capital of Bauchi state, spokesperson Mohammed Barau said. Fifteen Islamist fighters were injured and 156 arrested.

"The fundamentalists, known as Pokoharam, are those clamouring for the prohibition of western education in the state. They were armed and there were so many of them," he said.

National police spokesperson Emmanuel Ojukwu said the fighters were "armed with guns, bows and arrows and explosives." Calm was quickly restored. - Sapa-AP
