Miriam Makeba's Tribute Concert will finally take place during Women's Month.
The concert will be held on August 10 from 11am on the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg.
After a lot of work behind the scenes the internationally acclaimed Makeba's show is finally back on track.
In line with honouring women of South Africa during the month of August, a number of local and international musicians will pay tribute to the late legend Makeba, who was affectionately referred to as Mama Africa.
Crowd-captivating local artists such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Dorothy Masuka, Abigail Kubheka, Sibongile Khumalo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Siphokazi, Deborah Fraser, Makeba's Band, HHP and Guinea's super drummer, Pap Kouyate, will entertain the crowds.
Mama Africa was a great singer, a politician by default, a philanthropist and a fantastic cook.
She always smiled while educating people about the importance of loving Africa and their brothers and sisters on the mother continent. Her love shone through her music and the lyrics that paid tribute to the continent's great leaders. She used every opportunity she had to discussAfrican issues.
Most people preferred to have meetings at her house because they knew they would be treated to finger-licking cuisine from west, east or central Africa. Or better still, a potpourri of the entire continent.
Makeba was not the type of singer who produced hits, but rather catalogue material. Her classics will be listened to long after travelling to the moon became like going to Durban from Joburg.
Thousands of exiles and students in foreign countries still shed tears for Makeba because of all the kind things she did for them.
She was a mother and a nurturer to every young person. And she was very generous too. She had friends across the social and political divide. Her humility will always be something to remember.
Efforts such as Mama Africa's long-overdue tribute are a blessing because they will keep her legacy alive. It reminds South Africans that until we appreciate and uphold our legends, we cannot expect others to do so. It is very embarrassing when we see the world still embracing and loving her and locals are slowly forgetting her.
Makeba, undoubtedly one of our greatest treasures, died in November 2008 while performing in Italy.
