Lighting up crime spots

Criminals in crime hot spots in Tzaneen will soon have nowhere to hide after the municipality has decided to erect street lights in these areas.

Criminals in crime hot spots in Tzaneen will soon have nowhere to hide after the municipality has decided to erect street lights in these areas.

The areas that have been earmarked include the Rita turn-off in Maake, Mokgwathi crossing and the Nkambako four-way stop.

Spokesperson Moroka Malale said the decision followed continuous reports of criminal activities and many road accidents in the areas .

The municipality will also erect Apollo lights at major taxi ranks in rural areas in the municipality.

This would include Morutji-Relela taxi rank, N'wamitwa taxi rank and Mafarana taxi rank.

The municipality has also allocated R1million to erect speed humps at Mogapeng, Mariveni, Nkambako, N'wamitwa and Bolobedu South.

Malale said the programme would cost the municipality more than R2,6million.

"We hope to make our living environment safer for the benefit of every citizen in the municipality," he said.

He said that the programme is part of the operational budget of R579million recently tabled by mayor Othaniel Mushwana.
