THE KwaZulu-Natal government, in its drive to mobilise the public for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, will use local and international soccer events such as Soccerex 2009 and the African Cup of Nations 2010 in Angola to market the province as an attractive destination for tourists and investors.
This emerged in Pietermaritzburg yesterday when Premier Zweli Mkhize announced this financial year's budget vote for his office, which is R454010million.
Mkhize said: "We intend to actively drive the public mobilisation in order to boost the profile of the 2010 campaign and highlight the benefits of the World Cup to the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
"Our task is to ensure that a positive vibe is created to characterise the high level of expectation.
"More importantly, we want to build on the recent experiences of hosting the highly successful Fifa Confederations Cup."
Mkhize said this would be facilitated through activities at schools, churches, shopping centres, taxi ranks, railway stations and beaches.
"It will include using billboards, posters, flyers, media partnerships and other above and below the line marketing tools," he said.
He also said mechanisms would be implemented to ensure that service delivery was not hampered.
These would include the establishment of the offices of the ombudsperson and provincial planning commission.
Mkhize said his office would work closely with the provincial treasury to monitor fraud and corruption.
"We are at present investigating the creation of a unit that will have the capacity to investigate fraud and corruption internally," he said.
Mkhize urged civil society to play its role in advocating for and monitoring that government was implementing its programmes and projects effectively and efficiently.
He also announced that the horse-racing industry generated revenue of R65million.
The casino and limited payout machines generated an income totalling R268million in the 2008-09 financial year.
