Yesterday they officially opened a state-of-the-art school at Jilongo village, near Malamulele.
The opening of Jilongo High in the heart of the rural community marks the end of needy pupils' long walks to school.
The school comprises 12 classrooms, offices, an administration block, a hall and a science and computer laboratory.
The provincial department of education has already built 27 similar schools - with the majority of them opened by former president Kgalema Motlanthe during his short stint in high office.
The new school has already enrolled more than 300 pupils and has a complement of eight teachers to cover all subjects.
The provincial department of education's motto is "Education is a Pre-condition for Development" and the new schools will concentrate on improving maths, science and technology results.
"This occasion marks a new beginning in the education of our children," the premier said. "Gone should be the days when learning took place under a tree or conditions that can only be described as sub-human.
"In this month of celebration of Madiba's legacy we should remember his wise words that education 'is a powerful weapon in the hands of any nation'."
The premier also commended former education MEC Aaron Motsoaledi for his "sterling job" in improving education in the province.
