Lusanda Nonzwakazi Mbanjwa, 17, from eMhlangeni area in Rietvlei, uMzimkhulu, was stabbed several times and had her throat slit, allegedly by her former boyfriend.
Mbanjwa, a Grade 12 pupil at Rietvlei Senior Secondary School, died on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Zandra Wiid said Mbanjwa was on her way to school when her 20-year-old ex-boyfriend allegedly accosted her. Wiid said: "The two had allegedly broken up. According to witnesses, an argument ensued between the two.
"The suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Mbanjwa twice in the back and right arm. He started to walk away. It is alleged that when he saw that she was still alive, he went back and slit her throat.
"Some of the onlookers tried to apprehend him but he managed to run away."
Mbanjwa's father could not speak to Sowetan as he was in shock. A murder case is being investigated and the suspect is still at large.
Wiid was confident that the suspect, who is also a pupil at Mbanjwa's school, would be apprehended soon.
"We will catch him soon," Wiid promised.
