PENCIL-SLIM runner Elroy Gelant has no plans to add the 5000m to his list of events despite winning a bronze medal in the race at the recent 25th World Student Games in Serbia.
"Winning a medal at a big global competition was great for me and I will always cherish it, but the 5000m event is now out of the picture," Gelant said.
"My future in athletics is in the 1500m event, which is where I excel and there are no plans to change it. It was by accident that I found myself doing the 5000m in Serbia.
"The problem started at the beginning of the year when I was injured. I decided to do 5000m for endurance during my training after the rehabilitation process.
"When we went for the University Sport South Africa track and field championships in Stellenbosch in April I was not yet ready for the 1500m event.
"I registered for the 5000m as part of my endurance training, but things went so well for me because I ended up qualifying for the World Student Games. For me going to Serbia was great international exposure."
Gelant, a student at the University of North West Potchefstroom, has also qualified to represent South Africa in his speciality event at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Germany next month. "I'm now off to Germany to be with the other South African athletes at a training camp," he said.
