Ben Maree Hall events should surprise no one

THE Ben Maree Hall events are not surprising to anyone who has been following political developments in this province from the time when Rocky Malebane-Metsing protested Essop Pahad's appointment as premier-elect in 1993.

The NEC accepted the weird reasons forwarded for comrade Pahad's unsuitability, which included that he could not speak Setswana, had only one suit and was ugly.

No one at the NEC took us seriously when we informed them about the Setswana that Rocky and NP members were trying to unleash between erstwhile Bophuthatswana and Western Transvaal. Popo Molefe was another appointment considered unsuitable on the basis of language.

In February the NEC was informed about the role of Supra Mahumapelo and Themba Gwabeni in the looting of state resources and channeling them to Cope.

They also learnt about Cope meetings in Potchefstroom at the house of a Matlosana council director with Mbhazima Shilowa, attended by Mahumapeolo, and defections were plotted and about meeting between UCDP and Cope on election pacts, which Mangope and Lekota graced and Lekota asked Gwabeni when he was going to defect.

Had the NEC acted against the protagonists the groundswell of Ben Maree Hall could have been nipped in the bud and the "Jesus" charade would not have entrenched itself and deciding on key national assembly and provincial legislature appointments.

The ANC failed to stop the rot in 1993 and now the chickens have come home to roost.
