ONE of the suspects arrested in connection with a spate of armed robberies in Senwabarwana, outside Polokwane, yesterday appeared in court on a charge of possession of firearms and ammunition.

Ephraim Mabitsela was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly terrorising the community of Maleboho and surrounding areas since March. At his arrest he was found in possession of two firearms and ammunition.

He was with an accomplice and a third suspect was arrested a day later.

Spokesperson Sergeant Matlapa Maputla said Mabitsela appeared in the local magistrate's court and his case was postponed to July 31 . He was not granted bail .

According to Maputla, Mabitsela will appear with his alleged co-accused, aged 24 and 31, in the Bochum magistrate's court today on six armed robbery charges.

Their arrest follows a breakthrough by the police after a tip-off from residents.

"The two firearms are believed to belong to security guards who were robbed at clinics in Taaibosch and Bergregte ," Maputla said .

He said during the robbery in Taaibosch the men also took four cellphones from guards. They are also linked to robberies of businesses in the area.
