Nissan says this latest move is good news since more potential owners, low on cash for the previous limited and pricey range, now have better access to the brand.
The 2009 Navara has been given a mild exterior tweaking on its rear light clusters and a new matt finish grille that replaces the shiny appendage it was famous for.
Top range models also have new style alloy wheels for good measure.
The lower range, still premium by Nissan standards, is easily identified by the lack of Nissan's signature thick diameter roof-rails and foot rails that run along its flanks.
The models utilise the same engine range that consists of a 2,5-litre diesel motor.
But 4X2 models get a lower power version of 106kW and 356Nm while 4X4s make do with 128 kW and 400 Nm. A Petrol 4,0-litre V6 will be available a few weeks later.
The King Cab, a body shape last seen in the Nissan Hardbody era, makes a curious return. This variant, with extra rear space behind the front seats, is neither a single cab nor is it a double cab, and competes with offerings from Ford and Mazda at a slightly tricky to grasp end of the bakkie spectrum.
Nissan says this car is aimed at workers and technicians of sorts who probably work using expensive equipment and can't rely solely on the feeble theft deterrent of a tonneau cover to store a tool box.
Also counted as part of this customer profile are leisure seekers. These guys and gals, I presume, are the sort that'll be impressed by the "suicide doors" and the amount of rear space, big enough to accommodate those "bumba cool-boxes".
Navaras are available either as common, single diff, rear-wheel driven or in 4X4 form. Have it in the latter guise and you get a new-age 4X4 system that is electronically engaged using a round selector without needing to stop and the ability to climb up steep foothills easily.
The new Navara is bigger and more luxurious than anything out there but is priced to rival the population that includes the Hilux; Triton and Isuzu.
