Time to experience the magic of jazz again

IT'S the time of year when people travel from near and far to experience the magic of jazz.

IT'S the time of year when people travel from near and far to experience the magic of jazz.

The 2009 Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz is taking place at the Newtown Cultural Precinct from August 23 to 27.

All-time Swiss favourite and Grammy winner Andreas Vollenweider has not sold 14million albums in 47 countries for nothing.

His sensitive approach to music and his passion and artistic excellence has seen him perform at 3432 concerts across the globe.

Three decades ago Vollenweider reinvented the harp with his own unique sound. His album Air is the latest episode of this story.

On Air he no longer plays his harp as an accompanying instrument but brings it to the fore. Largely without extensive orchestral sonic landscapes, the subtlety, refinement and musicality of his innovative style is allowed to be truly recognised.

Jazz lovers will be tickled to know that he will feature Pops Mohamed on the Mbira Stage on Friday August 28 at 11pm and on Saturday August 29 at 11.15pm.

Other artists include the US's Aarle Leonard and Bob Baldwin, Ingrid Jense, Karen Briggs, Chieli Minnucci, Lao Tizer Band and Marion Meadows, Norman Brown, Phil Perry The Main Ingredients, our Brian Thusi, Gauteng Jazz Orchestra, Jimmy Dludlu, Jonas Gwangwa, Kesivan Naidoo, Sterling EQ, Vusi Mahlasela, Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band, Kunle Ayo and the Nigerian All Stars, Marbhovu, Netherland's Room 11, Rwanda's Somi and Spain's Sumra.
