Cops: foreigners were not beaten

POLICE in Levubu have rejected allegations that they helped Mashau villagers assault Zimbabwean nationals in what has been described as a xenophobic attack.

POLICE in Levubu have rejected allegations that they helped Mashau villagers assault Zimbabwean nationals in what has been described as a xenophobic attack.

It is alleged that the Zimbabweans were assaulted and forced to leave their belongings when villagers started attacking them.

Levubu police spokesperson Solly Mukhola denied that the villagers attacked Zimbabweans and said they were "only told" to leave the Mashau area.

Mukhola said that the villagers asked the police and Limpopo's home affairs officials to help them remove Zimbabweans accused of stealing their belongings.

Mukhola said the Zimbabweans left the area "under the guidance" of home affairs officials.
