KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Bheki Cele has reiterated his plea to motorists after 16 people died in various traffic accidents in less than 10 days.
In the latest accident six people, including the driver and a child, died on the R614 at the Montebelo turn-off in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Eight others were rushed to hospital with critical injuries after the driver of a taxi failed to stop at a stop sign, causing the vehicle to hit a tree and overturn.
Cele said motorists should take the road rules seriously to avoid unnecessary carnage.
He also urged all road users to be more vigilant and stick to the road regulations at all times.
"Too many of our people have lost their lives on the roads due to accidents that could have been prevented." Cele said.
"I would also like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved."
On Saturday on the N2 north Ultra City off-ramp in Winkelspruit, a car parked in the emergency lane was hit by a heavy vehicle, resulting in one death and two people injured.
On the R74 Greytown between Muden and Weenen a light motor vehicle collided head-on with a bakkie, leaving the driver dead.
Four people from the light vehicle were treated for shock on the scene.
Meanwhile, 12 people were arrested for drinking and driving during a road block at Margate on the South Coast on Friday.
