Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
THE DA has called on the public protector to investigate the conduct of Gauteng commissioner of correctional services Thozama Mqobi-Balfour.
"With the new evidence that has surfaced I believe there is now a case for the public protector to investigate," DA shadow minister for correctional services James Selfe said yesterday.
Mqobi-Balfour is the wife of former correctional services minister Ngconde Balfour.
She is one of two officials who has been found to be renting a house in the upmarket Woodhill golf estate in Pretoria East for R30000 a month at taxpayers' expense.
Correctional Services National Commissioner Xoliswa Sibeko, who also rens\ts a house in the same suburb for R35000 a month, was suspended last week with acting chief financial officer Nandi Mareka.
Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has asked the public service commission to investigate their conduct.
Sibeko and Mqobi-Balfour had official residences.
Balfour, who is an ANC backbench MP, declined to comment.
Weekend newspapers reported that a number of other questionable expenses on the part of the Gauteng commissioner, including:
lHiring a Mercedes-Benz, for R2000 a day to attend a choir contest (for which she also claimed expenses of R12000);
lAttending the Grahamstown Arts Festival to watch the Leeukop Prison Choir at a cost of R11400;
lUndertaking a trip to Eastern Cape with her kids, ostensibly to provide "labour law training".
The Sunday Times has also revealed that during her tenure as the director-general at the department of sports and recreation Sibeko had lived it up during a trip to the Cape Town jazz festival last year.
She allegedly booked herself into a R6600 a day hotel - despite having an official flat reserved for her by the government.
Sibeko allegedly splashed a further R79000 at the festival's exclusive Crystal gala dinner.
She also allegedly bought 40 tickets costing R11960 for people unknown to the department; and ordered furniture for the flat at R508896 - which she billed to the department.
