NBA Stars hold camp

THE African edition of the US National Basketball Association's global basketball development and community outreach programme will be held at the American International School of Johannesburg for the seventh consecutive year, from September 2 to 6.

NBA players and United States Olympians Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh and Dwight Howard will headline Basketball without Borders Africa. This was announced by the NBA, the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) and Basketball South Africa.

The four-day camp will unite the top 60 young basketball players from the sub-continent to promote basketball and encourage positive social change in the areas of education, health and wellness.

"Basketball without Borders helps us to bring attention to important social issues that affect communities around the world through the game of basketball," said Kathleen Behrens, the NBA's executive vice-president for social responsibility and player programmes.

"We know that by teaching the values of the game - teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work and healthy living - our current and former players and coaches can also make a lasting impact on communities in need."

The top young players on the continent (age 19 and under), as selected by the NBA, Fiba and participating federations, will come together to train under NBA players and coaches, and compete against their peers.

The players selected will be divided into teams independent of race, religion or nationality in an effort to promote friendship and diversity.

"Basketball without Borders is a unique programme because it emphasises more than basketball skills in young talent," said Fiba development director Zoran Radovic.

"Campers benefit from both the highest level of basketball instruction and because they are also equipped with the tools to make a positive impact among their peers, they become role models in their communities."
