Consider recession before demanding money

I HAVE been keenly observing the nationwide strikes by various unions. To be honest, some of the demands are ridiculous.

The body responsible for optimising and collecting revenue, Sars, is under a lot of duress. It is just above R19billion behind on its collection target for the current fiscal year, said Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan recently.

This is due to the global economic downturn.

So the government can't afford to spend the little money it has on salaries. There are so many challenges that need special attention - our hospitals, security ahead of the 2010 World Cup and so on.

Be thoughtful about the global recession when making demands.
