THE National African Farmers Union has called on the government to urgently fence off the country's borders to prevent foot-and-mouth diseases threatening the agriculture sector.
Nafu was responding to Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Tina Joemat-Pettersson's statement that the government was not yet ready to fence areas like the Kruger National Park and others while households remained unfenced because people would steal the fence and use it at their homes.
The minister was speaking at the Land Care conference in Polokwane.
This angered farmers, who claimed to have lost livestock as a result of lions roaming out of Kruger Park.
Nafu's Joe Gondo said: "As long as the farmers paid taxes, the government should make sure that fences were erected ."
