This according to South African Institute of Race Relations' statistics released yesterday.
The institute said poverty was measured at R350 a child a month in R2000 and adjusted annually with inflation.
The research found that there was a correlation between the average annual household income of a province and the children living in poverty in that province.
Rural provinces also had poorer households, the research found.
Limpopo has the lowest household income and had the largest proportion of children living in income poverty in 2007 at 82percent.
It was followed by Eastern Cape at 78percent and North West at 75percent.
The provinces with the highest average annual income are Gauteng and Western Cape.
