CARL Niehaus's woes started after his landlord Eric Corbishley claimed in a front-page Sunday Times story that he owed him more than R300 000 in rent arrears.
Niehaus took occupation of Corbishley's R5million mansion in Midrand after entering into a lease agreement, which he failed to honour.
In an astonishing litany of lies, Niehaus sent dozens of SMSes and e-mails to Corbishley claiming either the ANC was to blame for not giving him the money, or that it was about to give him the money, or that it had given him the money.
And when he was confronted with allegations that he owed hundreds of thousands of rands to politicians and influential businessmen and had committed fraud while working for the Gauteng government, a tearful Niehaus admitted that he, among others:
l He admitted to forging signatures while he was chief executive of the Gauteng Economic Development Agency; and
l Borrowed money over a six-year period from some of the brightest stars of the ANC and business galaxy, much of which he has not paid back.
