Nurses accuse hospital head of nepotism

ANGRY assistant nurses at Kgapane Hospital outside Modjadjiskloof in Limpopo have accused the institution's acting chief executive Mantwa Mabangwa of nepotism.

They said Mabangwa had often overlooked them when selecting nurses to upgrade their qualifications.

The assistant nurses alleged that some of them from poor backgrounds had been waiting for the training for a long time because they were overlooked as Mabangwa would often select her friends' children to undergo courses.

An assistant nurse who wanted to remain anonymous said five assistant nurses were supposed to undergo further training at Maphutha-Malatji Hospital near Phalaborwa from last month, but Mabangwa allegedly sent only one "because she is her friend's daughter".

Mabangwa became acting chief executive last year after the dismissal of Benny Moshobane, who was found guilty of fraud and corruption by the department's disciplinary committee.

Department spokesperson Sophy Sekole said they would investigate the allegations.
