CREATORS OF KWAITO ARE HONOURED

MTV base presented their top 10 kwaito legends of all time yesterday.

MTV base presented their top 10 kwaito legends of all time yesterday.

In the form of a countdown, MTV base pays tribute to the cornerstones of kwaito such as Arthur Mafokate, TKZee, Boom Shaka and Mandoza.

In the early 1990s when apartheid was abolished, South African youth began the celebration. But they weren't bumping to struggle songs or American imports. In the name of freedom and pride, South Africa's next generation created their own beat and called it kwaito.

It revolutionised the music industry and icons such as Arthur, Oscar "Oskido" Mlangeni and Mdu Masilela changed the way South Africans would dress, dance and even created a new township lingo.

To recognise the artists' contribution to the industry, MTV base has compiled a top 10 list profiling the icons and legends of kwaito.

The countdown features commentary, insights and opinions from a range of famous personalities, including DJ Cleo, Brickz, comedian Loyiso Gola, Gang of Instrumentals, R&B star Loyiso Bala, music journalist Kabomo Vilakazi, socialite Mika Stefano, to name a few.

Catch the show on MTV base on DStv on July 15 at 8pm and a repeat on July 19 at 9pm.
