THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is considering a joint meeting with leaders of the IFPin the volatile Greytown area under the Umvoti municipality.
This emerged on the last day of the ANC's two-day provincial general council meeting yesterday.
Eight people, including three councillors, (two from the IFP and one from the ANC) have been killed in Greytown after the elections in April.
This has prompted both parties to set up a task team comprising two senior provincial leaders from each party and senior police personnel.
ANC deputy provincial chairperson Willies Mchunu, a member of a task team appointed to resolve the killings in the area, said they were looking at the possibility of holding a mass meeting that would be addressed by leaders from both parties.
Other members are Bheki Cele from the ANC, and Blessed Gwala and Bonginkosi Buthelezi from the IFP.
"We know it's not going to be easy, but we are looking at all possibilities. At provincial level, we are busy engaging with our IFP counterparts in resolving the problems," Mchunu said.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier and ANC chairperson Zweli Mkhize said the bilateral meetings between the two parties are continuing and they would ensure that nothing jeopardised them.
"We are ready as the ANC to ensure that agreements between the two parties are implemented.
"This includes ensuring that no debate in the "house" spills over outside."
Some of the resolutions taken at the council are that the party would campaign vigorously for local government in 2011 and ensure that it attains onemillion members ahead of its centenary celebrations in 2012.
In preparation for the 2011 local government elections, the council resolved to begin earnest preparations by conducting assessments of ANC-led municipalities to weigh strengths and weaknesses so that necessary interventions can be made.
