ONE of the province's most wanted suspects and his accomplice have been shot and killed by Limpopo police in Mpumalanga.

Johannes Dube, Limpopo's most feared "criminal", was shot and killed together with an unidentified fugitive on Tuesday night.

Dube was on the police's wanted list for nearly a year.

The deceased was allegedly the leader of a gang that terrorised residents of Mahwelereng in Mokopane, and Magatle and Zebediela for more than a year.

Limpopo police spokesperson Superintendent Ronnel Otto said police acted on a tip-off from members of the public that Dube was hiding in the Secunda area in Mpumalanga.

She said on hearing the news the police went to the house in Embalehle, outside Secunda, and found him hiding.

"When he realised the house was surrounded he started firing in the direction of the police and they retaliated and shot and killed two men in the process," Otto said.

"One of the dead men was identified as Dube, the alleged kingpin behind a series of crimes, and the other man had not yet been identified."

Police recovered a 9mm pistol at the scene with its serial number erased.

According to Otto Dube's murder spree began on 31 May 2009 when he and his accomplices allegedly hijacked and killed Lieutenant-Colonel FM Kubjana, a member of the South African National Defence.

She said Constable Geoffrey Sithomola was shot dead and his colleague Constable John Kekana wounded during a shootout with Dube's gang on June 1 2009.

On Thursday last week a woman who owned a shop in Mahwelereng was shot and later died in hospital.

Otto said Dube was alleged to also be the mastermind behind this shooting.
