I'LL SAY it again. The SA auto industry is not behaving according to recessionary expectations.

You would have thought that with sales figures running deep in the red importers and manufacturers would slow down new model launches.

But the industry has been ushering in new versions of existing model line-ups and this has had positive spin-offs in terms of buyers opting for a new 2008-9 run-out unit of the outgoing model at a good price, such as a brand new Golf 5 GTI that's a mere 7kW less powerful than the current.

Price-wise and looks-wise, the GTI 5 remains a very good option over the GTI 6, if you can find one. But word from VWSA is all the GTI 5s have been sold out. You'll find pre-owned units that should be in good supply as a result of trade-ins for the new model.

GMSA has informed us that its Opel Corsa Utility (the half-ton bakkie) has reached a milestone. The release of the sales figures for June 2009 saw the Corsa Utility achieve 100000 units sold since 2004.

Sifting through specials this week, we start with this Opel bakkie. McCarthy GM dealers are offering free rubberising and a tonneau cover with purchase of any Corsa Ute.

The McCarthy Call-a-Car dealer in Gezina has 2008 Toyota Yaris models from R90000 with low deposits.

Buyers in the Emalahleni Metro (that's Witbank ) should try the Audi stockists in Middelburg, where there's a special on new A4 1,8T units with no deposit and a R5000-odd monthly instalment.

But there's a balloon price attached to this deal, where potential owners must part with at least 25% of the car's original price of R415105 in 72 months' time.

And for a less traumatic Audi A4 1,8T ownership experience, choose either the 6-speed manual or the DSG.
