WHILE the news that Orlando Pirates have finally confirmed Gert Schalkwyk as their player might not surprise The Ghost, the arrival of Ndumiso Mabena could come as a shock to some Pirates fans.
The gifted 22-year-old attacker has been snatched up from National First Division Inland Stream club Winners Park.
The Dennilton-born player, known as "Madala", scored nine goals for Winners Park last season, finishing as the league's top scorer. Schalkwyk, on the other hand, has long been linked with a move to Pirates. Media reports at one stage suggested the midfielder had already signed a contract with the club.
But Pirates administrator Floyd Mbele insists Schalkwyk signed on the dotted line only yesterday. Both players agreed to three-season contracts.
Said Mabena after he was unveiled yesterday: "Obviously I'm excited to have joined a team I grew up supporting. Pirates are a big club with big ambitions and I'm eager to assist them to attain their goals.
"I feel very honoured that I will play alongside players such as Teko Modise, Dikgang Mabalane, Katlego Mashego and Schalkwyk."
The latter described his move to Pirates as a "big challenge".
"I know the challenges that go with playing for a team of Pirates' stature and I would not have joined [them] if I doubted my potential," said Schalkwyk, who helped Bloemfontein Celtic avoid relegation last season.
"It will require my total commitment and discipline to make it at Pirates. But I'm looking forward to helping my new team."
The former Chiefs linkman has pace and an eye for goal. He could be just what the doctor ordered.
